History of Champion Trading Company
Champion Trading Company was founded in 1994 by Dr. Mahmoud A. Wahba and Dr. Susanne Wahba as a direct result of the privatization of the Egyptian Cotton Industry. Mr. Wahba, and Egyptian-American businessmen living in the US for more than 20 years, worked closely with the Egyptian Government in reopening its prized Cotton Industry.
Champion is a US based company with major investments in Egypt. Over the past two years the company has acquired 16 Gins and Mills throughout Egypt. Based on the commitment of the Egyptian Government to privatize the Cotton Industry and rebuild its export capability, Champion Trading was created to transform the outdated business practices of the last thirty years into a modern free market structure. Champion has already established itself as a market leader in the export of Seed by-products, Cotton Fiber, Yarn and Fabrics.
In 1996 the Company opened King Cotton Inc, a sales and marketing office in its Greenwich, Connecticut headquarters to sell Fine Count Egyptian Cotton Yarn and Fabrics to the US Textile, Apparel, and Home-Furnishings markets.
The Mystique of Egyptian Cotton - Championed by Champion Holding Company
For centuries Egyptian Cotton has been known as the most luxurious fiber in the world. The finest garments and home furnishings have all been crafted out of the yarns spun from this "Royal Plant". Because of its unusual length and uniformity, Egyptian Cotton is the definitive fiber for today's fabrics requiring fitness and strength.
Cotton growing started in Egypt in 1820 when a Frenchmen, Monsieur Junel discovered an unusual cotton plant growing in a local orchard. Intrigued by the beautiful fabrics made abroad, Mohammed Ali Pasha, the founder of modern Egypt, imported Sea Island and Brazilian Cotton seeds some thirty years later. It is believed that these variants are responsible for the origin of Egyptian Cotton.
Cotton growing and production was controlled by the Egyptian Government until 1840 when it was privatized by Said Pasha, who was the the Governor of Egypt. Egyptian Cotton became known as the symbol for luxury and elegance during this period. During the 1960s the Cotton Industry was again nationalized. Government mismanagement resulting in prolonged declines in crop planting and yields, led to Egyptian Cotton's virtual disappearance outside the country. In 1994 the reprivatization of the Cotton Industry was once again initiated to encourage production and export.
Egyptian Cotton is grown today in two primary variants: Extra Long Stable and Long Stable.
Extra Long Stable Cotton is planted in the Northern regions of the Egyptian Delta where the climate is cooler than in the South. The higher humidity combined with the rich soil produces the most prized cotton in the world.
Long Stable Cotton is grown in the Southern regions of the Nile Valley. The lower grades of Long Stable are used for domestic consumption, where as the higher grades are specifically reserved for export.
The crop is planted in the South in February, and in March in the cooler Northern region. Cotton seeds are planted in wide rows spaced far apart allowing the cotton plants more water and nutrients to increase their blooms. There are typically two to three pickings per season. The first being when one-third of the crop is matured, the second when the remaining is matured, and the third usually for lower grades.
Egyptian Cotton derives its unique character from being hand treated from the moment it is planted until it is delivered to the final user. The Egyptian farmer has learned from proceeding generations the prized techniques of producing superior plants with out the use of chemicals. All weeding is done by hand. Fertilizers are primarily organic nitrates and phosphates. No chemical pesticide or defoliants are used. All Cotton is picked by hand without the use of heavy machinery. Finally, after picking al the cotton, it is ginned by Roller Gins so as not to damage the perfectly formed fibers.
Not only is Egyptian Cotton the strongest and most luxurious fiber in the world, it is also the most natural.
